Roy "King of Country" Acuff first recorded the song in 1947 and it is was then recorded again by Hank Williams in 1951.

The song was covered by Slim Whitman, Gene Vincent, Hank Snow and Conway Twitty before it was recorded by Willie Nelson in 1975, going straight to number one on the charts and kick starting his music career. A music video was created to go with the song 11 years later, in 1986.

Elvis, who was known to enjoy playing the song on the piano, covered the song in 1976.

In later years, UB40 and Shania Twain (the latter as a duet with Willie Nelson) both recorded the song.
