When reading into 'Oh Lonesome Me,' the roots of the song do not seem to be that interesting, but the various links to Elvis Presley are

.

Earlier this year, new Elvis army home recording tapes were shared and the last song on the reel was a relatively short version of Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' - which Elvis and his friends jammed to with a guitar. The tapes are from Christmas 1958, a year after Gibson released his version of the song.

Gibson's b-side was 'I Can't Stop Loving You,' which Elvis would go on to sing over 200 times live on stage, including during his last ever concert in June 1977. It was produced by Chet Atkins, who played on several Elvis records and featured the Jordanaires' back-up vocals. Two other musicians who played on Elvis records also ccompanied Gibson; Hank Garland and Floyd Cramer.

In April of the following year, 1958, Gibson titled his album after the song and the next album he next produced was a gospel one, titled 'No One Stands Alone' that featured several songs that Elvis also recorded; 'Known Only To Him,' 'Where No One Stands Alone,' 'An Evening Prayer' and 'Walk That Valley' - the latter Elvis recorded as part of the Million Dollar Quartet. Also on the album was 'My God Was Real,' which Jerry Lee Lewis was famously expelled from school for playing.

Other artists to record 'Oh Lonesome Me' include Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Neil Young, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tony Christie. 'The Muppet Show' once featured a version sung by Loretta Lynn, as well as a Mexican band called 'Banda Vallarta Show,' covering the song in Spanish.
