The song is a type of music usually called Negro spiritual and is quite commonly known as 'Motherless Child.'

It dates back to the mid-1800's and the lyrics suggest it is being sung by a slave who has been separated from his friends and family. 'Motherless Child' has been sung by artists including Tom Jones, Odetta, Grant Green, Eric Clapton and John Legend.

Elvis used the song (but did not sing it) as part of a medley along with 'Where Could I Go But To The Lord,' 'Up Above My Head' and 'Saved.' Today marks 50 years since his version was shown on TV as part of 'Singer Presents.... Elvis.' (Usually referred to as the ''68 Comeback Special.')
