Ray Charles and his band were on tour in the summer of 1954 when the Southern Tones' 'It Must Be Jesus' came on the car radio. Charles and his trumpeter Renald Richard then wrote 'I've Got A Woman,' now known as 'I Got A Woman,' based on the melody of the gospel song and recorded it just before Christmas of that same year.

Released a few weeks later, it became Charles' first hit. Elvis recorded the song in 1956 and started to sing it live. He continued to sing the song in the 70's, sometimes going straight into a version of 'Amen.'

Don Backy went on to record an Italian version, while Chet Atkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Bryan Adams and Stevie Wonder all covered the original version. Also, in 2005, Kanye West featured lyrics from the song in his song 'Gold Digger.'
