Ken Darby penned the lyrics to the song in 1956 for Elvis' upcoming film' Love Me Tender' and, with 'Anyway You Want Me' on the B-side, it became a number one hit for the King.

Darby based the song on an American Civil War song called 'Aura Lee,' which had it's written by George Poulton and lyrics by William Fosdick. It was later adapted into a song called 'Army Blue' by a former soldier called George Olmstead in 1870 and has also been recorded by Bing Crosby and Coppola - latter for her 2017 film 'The Beguiled.'

'Love Me Tender' was also used in films that include 'Porky's Revenge,' 'Honeymoon in Vegas,' Californian Dreaming'' and 90 Minutes in Heaven.

Elvis' film was originally going to be called 'The Reno Brothers' (the name of the 1800's criminal gang that the film was based on), but 20th Century Fox were so impressed by the song that the re-named the film after the song.

It has been recorded by numerous artists that include BB King, Nat King Cole, Cliff Richard, Julie Andrews, Johnny Cash, Barry Manilow, Linda Ronstadt, Tony Bennett and Pat Boone, to name just a few.
