Somtimes known as just 'Memphis,'  the song was recorded and written by Chuck Berry in 1959. Berry's single prior to the song was 'Almost Grown,' which is most commonly known for featuring in the 1973 Richard Dreyfuss film 'American Graffiti.' 'Little Marie' was Berry's sequel to the song.

The song was later recorded by the Beatles, Bo Diddley, Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, the Rolling Stones and the Who. Bernd Spier, who later went into buying and selling property, recorded a German version of the song in 1964.

Elvis recorded the song in 1964, as well and some fans see the song as a prophecy.
